The Victron Orion XS DC-DC Battery Charger charges your service battery straight off your vehicle's alternator while the engine's running, in an ultra-compact, fanless unit that runs at up to 98.5% efficiency. It stays cool enough to deliver full rated output even in a hot, cramped engine bay, no thermal derating until 40°C. Available as a 12V or 12V/24V/mixed-voltage model, it's ideal for dual-battery setups and doubles as a DC-DC converter for sensitive electronics.

Charging voltage and input current are both fully configurable, so you can match it to lithium, AGM, gel or flooded batteries and set a current limit that protects your alternator from being overloaded. It works with smart Euro 5/6 alternators too, drawing a steady current from them rather than letting them throttle back output like they sometimes do with a basic charger. Built-in engine running detection means it only charges when the engine's actually on, so it won't drain your starter battery.

The Orion XS is purpose-built for dual battery systems fed by an intelligent alternator, handling the variable output those alternators produce without you needing to babysit it. Once it's set up, the combination of configurable current limits, temperature protection, and the adaptive charge algorithm means it looks after both the service battery and the alternator on its own, and you get full visibility into what it's doing through VictronConnect or your wider Victron system.

Configurable charging
Input and output current are both adjustable via VictronConnect, in steps as fine as 0.1A. That gives you fine control to protect your alternator from overloading while still charging your service battery properly, especially useful with intelligent alternators that manage their own output.

Ultimate control
The Orion XS can be fully integrated into your Victron system thanks to its VE.Direct port. You can monitor all its performance data and adjust settings from wherever you are. It has nice and simple controls so you can let the charging algorithm handle the rest.

Adaptive 4-stage charge algorithm
The algorithm doesn't treat every charge cycle the same. For lead-acid batteries, it is important that during shallow discharges, the absorption time is kept short to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge, it automatically extends absorption time to make sure the battery gets a full, proper charge, adjusting on its own without you needing to set anything manually.

Smart alternator compatibility
An integrated mechanism detects whether the engine is running (engine shutdown detection), which only activates the charger when the alternator supplies power. This ensures that the charger only draws power when the alternator is supplying power, i.e., when the engine is running.

Low temperature shutdown and input undervoltage protection
The charger shuts down automatically at low temperatures to protect lithium batteries from damage. It also automatically shuts down if the input voltage drops below a set threshold, and restarts when the input voltage rises above that set threshold, protecting the input source, i.e., the starter battery, from deep discharge.

Bluetooth Smart and remote control
Built-in Bluetooth pairs with the free VictronConnect app on iOS or Android, where you can adjust settings, monitor live activity, and update firmware. The app's Instant Readout also shows key data, including any warnings or alarms, without needing to connect to the products first. The charger can also be switched on and off remotely - Typical applications include wiring a switch or Battery Management System (BMS).

VE.Smart Networking 

Use VE.Smart Networking to receive Vsense, Tsense, and Isense data over the wireless network for your Orion XS DC-DC battery charger, for example, from a BMV, a SmartShunt, or a Smart Battery Sense. The charger uses the available information from the battery to optimize the charging parameters. This improves charging efficiency and extends battery life.

Parallel operation for higher output

Need more charging power? You can simply connect multiple Orion XS units in parallel to increase output current for larger battery banks or higher-demand applications. This flexible setup makes it easy to expand the charging capacity as demand grows.

Which model do I need?

• 12/12-50A — 12V only, delivers up to 700W. Suits a standard 12V dual-battery setup: campervan, caravan, boat or 4WD.
• 12/12-70A — 12V only, delivers up to 1000W, for larger 12V battery banks or higher current draw.
• 1400 — dual voltage (12V and 24V), delivers up to 1400W, and also converts 12V to 24V or 24V to 12V, the one to choose for mixed-voltage systems.
